Walter was born in Widness. He was an orphan and spent most of his younger days with foster parents in Norfolk. During World War Two he was in the Merchant Navy on perilous convoys at the receiving end of ferocious sea warfare. Mediterranean, Atlantic as well as Arctic convoys, various ships that Walter served on were torpedoed, it’s a miracle he survived. During D-Day his ship was in the front line of enemy fire at the landing beaches, he said the sea was red with blood and strewn with dead bodies.  

Postwar Walter left the Merchant Navy. The horrors he experienced lived with him. Like many of those that served on the front line during World War Two he received no pension or help whatsoever from the British authorities. Sadly Walter passed away in 2007 with an illness that was due to the conditions he endured during World War Two. Again, he received no recognition or compensation from the British Government.
