Saving Private Ryan” is a fiction story based
upon an actual event. Although genuine attempts have been made to make the film realistic, the landing scenes are far from authentic. In reality, D-Day 6th June 1944, the tide forced the American landing on Omaha Beach to be slightly earlier than the British who were next to them on Gold Beach. This enabled me and some of the 231 Brigade to briefly witness the heavy bombardment the Americans were taking. Before the American landing craft could get anywhere near to grounding, they must have come under severe German bombardment, presumably killing many. Unfortunately due to the American’s earlier landing the 231 Brigade had lost the element of surprise, therefore the Germans were waiting for us, resulting in a ferocious bloodbath. CONTINUED
